Barelas Offers Fun for Everyone and History, Too

Barelas in Southwest Albuquerque Great for Tourists and Family Fun

The Barelas neighborhood in Southwest Albuquerque is centrally located, offers easy access to I-25, and there are so many fun things to do and see. Chances are if you have family or friends come in from out of town, you’ll spend some time in Barelas, showing them some of the treasures our city has to offer.

Fun Things to Do in Barelas

Barelas is close to all of the ABQ BioParks and adjacent to the Zoo. The mission of the city-funded BioPark complex is to “Discover Nature and Inspire Action.” The zoo has undoubtedly been doing that for nearly 100 years, with over 900 animals considered to be a part of a successful conservation plan.

Another fun thing to do in Barelas is to visit the Wheels Museum. The Wheels Museum is a non-profit connected to the Albuquerque Rail Yard. It’s the perfect place to take student-aged children to learn about the history of transportation. And any train enthusiast will be fascinated by the restoration of the Silver Iris train car. Once the repair is complete, the museum plans to connect it with a first-class dining car and run excursions between Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

Best Restaurants in Barelas, Albuquerque

Red Ball Cafe is a staple of Barelas. It’s claim to fame is that it is the “Original Home of the Wimpy Burger.” What is a Wimpy Burger, you might ask? It’s basically like a slider—a small hamburger (only $1.95!) with a signature “wimpy sauce.” They even have #wimpyburgerwednesday, and a local favorite is the Wimpy Combo with two Wimpy Burgers and fries. Like any good New Mexican restaurant, they also serve enchiladas, tacos, and green chili.
